The first appointment is typically a 60-minute consultation. During this visit, we will speak at length about your health concerns and address any questions you may have about acupuncture and the treatment process. We will also discuss your health and personal histories in detail, followed by any relevant physical examinations. To acquire a more accurate picture of your state of health, your pulse will be checked. Pulse palpation is generally more involved than Western medical pulse-taking methods; there are six pulse positions in total, with three on each wrist. The structure, color, and coating of your tongue also provide keys to your physical health. The primary objective of the first appointment is to assess the underlying conditions that have led to your current concerns. Treatment will follow the diagnostic process.
If possible, please try to wear comfortable clothing for your appointment. Depending on your treatment needs, you may often remain fully clothed during your treatment. However, towels are always available if you would prefer to partially disrobe or if your treatment makes partial disrobing appropriate. Please eat sensibly (avoiding caffeine and alcohol) a few hours before your appointment. It is best to be neither hungry nor extremely full during your treatment.
Treatments can vary greatly, depending upon your individual needs and considerations. In addition to acupuncture, your treatment may include cupping, heat therapy, electrical needle stimulation, or massage therapy.
Once acupuncture needles have been inserted into appropriate points on your body, your acupuncturist will usually leave you to rest for up to 20 minutes, allowing the needles sufficient time to influence your body’s Qi. This presents a great opportunity to relax during an otherwise hectic day. Generally, people feel refreshed, rested afterward.
The number of treatments varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition, as well as the strength and constitution of the person. The treatments have a cumulative effect. Once symptoms improve and overall harmony and balance have been achieved, treatment frequency is reduced.
Results from treatments depend on the overall health of the person and the nature of the condition for which you are seeking. Acute conditions could be resolved with as few as two or three treatments, while chronic ones often respond best to a longer period of treatment.
